Meeting Minutes—Board of Directors—Sept. 6, 2012

Attendees: Mark Law, Tim Dozier, Don Isbell, Dagan Henderson, Cynthia Lee, Rick and David Long

Mark Law called the meeting to order at approximately 7:00 PM.

501(c)(3) C3 Nonprofit Organization: Dagan reported that there was no new status on the 501(c)(3) application.

PUBS By-Laws:  Club By-Laws were discussed, and the board felt that it was important to promote responsible drinking its body. The idea of having complimentary taxi service for members who may have had a few to many was discussed, but no consensus was met.  A draft copy of the By-Laws is being work on by David, and should be completed by next board meeting.

Club Membership Fees: To begin with PUBS will be offering two levels of membership—Regular and Founders.  The Regular Membership will cost each member $25/year.  The Founders Membership will cost a member $100 for the first year. The Founders Membership is targeted at collecting enough funds to get the club off the ground. It’s totally voluntary, and it will have some additional benefits that have yet to be determined.

New Member Signup Form: David handed out copies of the GCBA signup sheet to be used as potential template to be used by PUBS.  All board members liked the format, so with some minor changes PUBS will be adopting the form.

Membership Name Tag: The board thought that issuing name tags to members would be a good idea. The board will look into the cost of name tags to see if it will be feasible or not.

Club Insurance:  No decision has been made as of yet whether the club will purchase insurance. For the most part the board feels that insurance is important, but at this time, there are other more important needs that have to be met before considering spending money.

Fund Raising:  Outside of membership fees, the club needs other forms of revenue. A monthly raffle is a good fundraiser for GCBA, so the board felt that we should implement one at the general meeting.  We’ll need to start looking for donations from local brewery’s and beer establishments.  If anyone has additional ideas for raising funds please share them with a board member.  Hey, hears one…How about a Brewer’s Yard Sale where a portion of the proceeds goes to the club?

Monthly Beer Competition: The September style of the month is, well, no style.  Fee free to enter any kind of beer you want.  I wonder what President Mark (Mr. IPA) is going to bring??? Next month is Oktoberfest.  You should have your beer lagering for this club competition! Big Mike, who will be freshly returned from Oktoberfest in Germany, will be sharing his knowledge about the style, and I’m sure he’ll also have some fun stories to go along with it.  DON’T MISS IT!!!!  By the way, Big Mike is the person who spoke about Saisons at our last meeting.

Beer Judging Forms:  To assist with judging, and to give feedback to brewers, a simple beer scoring sheet will be distributed at the next meeting.  Brewers who want feedback on their beer should let the membership know at the meeting.

Guest Speakers:  Don and Cynthia will be approaching Hangtown Brewing and Roseville Brewing Company to see if they would be willing to speak at a future meeting.  Update…Kelly and/or Brett from RBC have agreed to present this month.  They’ll be talking to us about the use of adjuncts in beer.

Brew Day: David volunteered to host a PUBS brew day at his house on October 6th . This date is still tentative and may change.

PUBS Meeting Place:  Erik from the Brewmeister has been very gracious to let PUBS meet at his Roseville store, but we really need to find another location. Total Wine and Owl Club has been suggested; however, if you know of an affordable meeting place, please share it with one of the board members so that we can look into it.  In the mean time we will continue to meet at the Brewmeister as long as it’s ok with Erik.  Thanks again Erik for letting us use you facility!
